Valhalla | Washington, DC

This design for a rear addition to a historic row-house in the Bloomingdale neighborhood of Washington DC was conceived to provide a hidden and sheltered enclave and create a spacious Master Bedroom suite at the upper level of the home. It provides an airy yet hidden respite for the homeowners to escape to, removed from the rest of the house by being located at the termination point at the upper level of the house, it is thought to give a sort of modern punctuation mark to the traditional verticality of the historic front facade and more formal living areas of the house. The soaring horizontal roof provides a broad shelter to the private bathroom and balcony at the rear of the Master Bedroom suite, and also provides shade from the intense west facing afternoon sun in summer. The addition is conceived as an extension that provides a sort of tail fin helping to balance and complete the massing at the rear of the building.
